Verantos, Optum Life Sciences, and Amgen present expanded INSIGHTS Asthma Pragmatic Registry at CHEST 2026

Publications

The INSIGHTS Asthma Pragmatic Registry™ has expanded 31-fold to 349,600 US patients with moderate-to-severe asthma. Data reliability and richness held steady or improved at the larger scale. The registry previously covered multiple US health systems, and this expansion draws on Optum Market Clarity data, including unstructured clinical notes. The findings were presented on October 21 at CHEST 2026, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.

‍

Key findings

The expanded registry includes patients aged 12 and older with moderate-to-severe asthma, drawn from a source population of more than 23 million people with asthma. Median follow-up is 83 months.

  • Data reliability remained high, with 91% accuracy, 72% completeness, and 64% traceability. Accuracy was measured as an F1 score (the harmonic mean of recall and precision) against chart review by clinical annotators, with 90% recall and 92% precision.
  • The registry averages 25,560 data elements per patient-year.
  • Curating unstructured electronic health record data and linking it to claims and structured records increased the number of pulmonary function test results 88-fold, from 9,840 to 866,456.
  • The share of patients identified as having severe asthma more than doubled, from 5.8% to 13.9%.
  • Identification of patients with cough, dyspnea, and wheezing increased 58- to 77-fold. After enhancement, 77.5% of patients had documented cough, 77.3% had dyspnea, and 59.1% had wheezing.

What it means

Much of the clinical detail that matters in asthma research sits in physician notes and test results that traditional data sources do not readily capture. Curation and linkage bring that information into view at national scale. The authors report that INSIGHTS is now the largest moderate-to-severe asthma dataset described to date and one of the richest, with the potential to support asthma research and improve patient care.

About the data

The Pragmatic Registry links electronic health records, administrative claims, and death registry data. Verantos optimized data reliability across all sources, measured as accuracy, completeness, and traceability. All data were de-identified and conformed to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model.
